Single Deck Blackjack (NetEnt): Free Online Play in Canada

By the Best Canadian Casinos editorial team · Checked: 14 Oct 2026 · 19+ (18+ QC, MB, AB)

One deck. Fifty-two cards. The way blackjack was dealt before casinos started piling on shoes.

NetEnt's Single Deck Blackjack is a favourite of strategy players because fewer decks mean a lower house edge, all else equal. All else is rarely equal, mind you. Here's what the table actually offers and how to practise it free.

Rules of the one-deck table

A single 52-card deck, shuffled before every round. Standard goal, standard actions: hit, stand, double, split.

Single-deck games usually tighten something to compensate for the player-friendly deck. Common trade-offs are doubling allowed only on 9 to 11 or 10 to 11, limited splitting, or the dealer hitting soft 17. NetEnt lists its own set in the help screen. Check in game info rather than trust any article, including this one, for the exact build your casino runs.

Speed and the demo

Because the deck is reshuffled after every hand, rounds are quick and identical in structure. The free mode lets you play several hundred hands in an evening, which is exactly what you need to burn the chart into memory. One small annoyance: some casinos hide NetEnt demos behind a login. Check on site.

What to avoid: any single-deck table paying 6:5 on blackjack. That wipes out the whole benefit of the single deck and then some.

Why one deck helps (a little)

With one deck, blackjacks come slightly more often and doubling on 11 works better. Under typical single-deck rules with 3:2, basic strategy brings the house edge under 0.5%, sometimes far under. NetEnt's game info shows the return for its version.

Then the bad news. The deck is reshuffled every round online, so card counting does nothing. Zero. The old 2023 page didn't say that, and plenty of players still think one deck means an exploitable game.

Bets and payouts

If the blackjack line reads anything other than 3:2, close the tab.

Doubles and splits pay at the same rate as the hand they belong to. A split ace plus a ten counts as 21, not blackjack, so it pays 1:1.

Strategy: use a single-deck chart

Basic strategy for one deck differs from the multi-deck chart in a handful of spots. Examples: doubling 11 against a dealer ace, doubling 9 against a 2, and a few soft doubles. They're small, but this game is all about small.

Print the chart. Or keep it in a second window. Play 300 hands free and check yourself every time you hesitate.

Digression: I learned single-deck charts during a January cold snap in Winnipeg, when the car wouldn't start and there was nothing else to do. Not a method I recommend; the chart part is fine. Basic strategy reduces the edge, it does not remove it.

RNG vs live tables

Live blackjack studios deal from multi-deck shoes, typically eight decks. A true single-deck game exists online only in RNG form, as far as we know. So if one deck is what you want, this kind of table is where you'll find it.

A shoe of eight decks with a cut card does at least let a live player see more of the cards, but the house sets the penetration and shuffles early. For practical purposes, neither format is countable for a casual player.

RNG also gives you a free mode, which live doesn't, and a fresh shuffle every hand. See live casino for the studio side.

Where to play it in Canada

Québec players can start with Spin Casino or Yukon Gold, both open to Québec with French menus. We did not confirm NetEnt's Single Deck table in either lobby; NetEnt's older table range is not carried everywhere. Search before you deposit.

Yukon Gold lists a C$10 minimum deposit; its first-deposit offer has 200x wagering and blackjack's contribution is set in the terms, often low. Spin Casino's 35x is easier, and its max bet with a bonus active is C$8 (shown to us in euros; confirm in the cashier).

Frequently asked questions

Can I count cards in online single-deck blackjack?

No. The deck is reshuffled every round, so counting has no effect.

Is single-deck always better than multi-deck?

Only if the other rules are equal. A 6:5 payout or tight doubling rules can make it worse.

Is the NetEnt demo free?

Yes, with play credits. Some casinos show it only after login.

Why do some single-deck tables pay 6:5?

To cancel the advantage one deck gives the player. A 6:5 natural adds well over a full percentage point to the house edge. Avoid those tables.
