European Blackjack (Betsoft): Free Online Game in Canada

No hole card. That's European Blackjack, and it changes one decision more than any other.

Betsoft's version follows the European pattern, the one most of the world plays outside North America: the dealer takes a second card only after you finish. If it's a blackjack, your doubles and splits go with it. Below is what that means in practice, and you can test it free first.

European rules in plain words

One dealer card up, nothing underneath. You play your hand, then the dealer draws.

It's the format the old 2023 page promised "without downloading and without registration". The demo still needs neither, though some casinos only show it after login.

Typical European rules use two decks, allow doubling only on 9, 10 or 11, and have the dealer stand on soft 17. Betsoft's exact set (decks, resplits, doubling after split) is in the game's help screen. We say "typical" on purpose; check in game info.

Some European tables also restrict splitting to one split per hand and pay only one card to split aces. Nothing unusual; it all shows in the help file.

The no-hole-card part bites when the dealer shows an ace or ten. If you double or split and the dealer then turns up a natural, you lose the whole amount. American tables would have stopped you before that.

The tip: respect the dealer's ace

Against a dealer ace or ten, don't double 11 or split 8s as freely as an American chart suggests. European strategy charts are more cautious there, because a dealer blackjack eats everything you added.

Small change. Real effect.

Concretely: with 11 against a dealer 10, an American chart says double. A European no-hole-card chart says hit. Same with splitting 8s against a ten or an ace: European charts often say hit instead, because a dealer natural takes both split bets. Your demo session is the place to absorb these few changes.

I once read a whole set of European rules in a Tim Hortons line and got to the coffee before the doubling section, which tells you how long the line was. Read yours properly, at home. And keep in mind the edge stays with the house.

How much the house keeps

Somewhere around 0.4 to 0.6% with the right chart; fewer decks pull it down, the doubling restriction pushes it up. Betsoft lists the return in game info. Insurance, as everywhere, is a poor bet.

One more nuance. Because a dealer natural takes your doubled and split money, the European edge climbs slightly if you copy an American chart. Use the right chart and the gap is small.

Compare that with roulette: a single-zero wheel keeps 2.70% of every bet. Blackjack played properly keeps a fraction of that, which is why serious table players end up here. Played carelessly, though, blackjack can cost more than roulette. The skill cuts both ways.

RNG vs live dealer

Here's the funny part: most live blackjack studios deal European-style, with no hole card. So practising on this RNG table is decent preparation for live play. RNG has the demo and instant rounds; live is real money only, with betting timers and a minimum stake set by the table (often higher than RNG minimums; check on site). More on our live casino page.

Where to play from Canada

In Québec, Royal Vegas and Spin Casino accept players and show French. We have not confirmed Betsoft's table in their lobbies; search before depositing. Our Québec guide covers the legal picture (not legal advice).

Both list a C$10 minimum deposit and Interac. Both are operated by Baytree Interactive Ltd under a Kahnawake licence. Their welcome offers carry 35x wagering, and the max bet while a bonus is active is C$8 (shown to us as €8; confirm in the cashier). Blackjack's contribution to that wagering is set by each casino.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference from American Blackjack?

No hole card and no peek. See American Blackjack.

Why does the dealer take the second card later?

That is simply the European dealing procedure. It removes the peek, and with it the protection on your doubles and splits.

Can I double on any two cards?

In the typical European set, only on 9 to 11. Check Betsoft's help screen.

Does Betsoft's European Blackjack have side bets?

Not in the standard version we describe here. Check the table in your casino's lobby, builds vary.
