How the American table plays

The hole card is the point. When the dealer shows an ace or a ten-value card, the game checks the face-down card before you act. Blackjack underneath? The hand ends right there and you lose only your original bet.

No extra money gets trapped on a double or a split you never should have made. That is the American rule in one line.

The rest is familiar. Cards 2 to 10 count face value, picture cards count 10, an ace counts 1 or 11. You hit, stand, double or split, then the dealer draws to a fixed rule. Betsoft states the number of decks and whether the dealer hits soft 17 in the help screen; we would rather you read it there than trust a number we can't confirm for every casino build (operators sometimes run their own configuration).

Insurance appears when the dealer shows an ace. More on that below, and none of it is flattering.

Bets and what they pay

If a table ever shows 6:5 for blackjack, walk. That single change costs more than every other rule on the page combined.

House edge, and where it hides

Played well, roughly 0.5%. Played on gut feeling, several times that.

The figure assumes basic strategy on every hand, which is the part nobody does at 1 a.m. with the Leafs losing on the other screen. The peek rule helps you a little compared with no-hole-card tables. Soft-17 rules and deck count nudge it up or down by a fraction, so check in game info for the exact build.

Insurance is a separate bet with a far worse edge. Skip it. Even with a "good" hand like 20, insurance (or "even money" on a natural) is the same bet wearing a nicer jacket.

One tip that actually moves the number

Learn when to double on 10 and 11. Most casual players under-double, and this is where basic strategy earns its keep: double 11 against anything but an ace (some charts say even then, depending on rules), double 10 against 2 to 9.

Use the free mode to drill it. Twenty minutes of play credits, a strategy chart open on the side, done.

No chart beats the house over time. It just keeps the edge near that 0.5% instead of letting it drift, and a losing streak is still a losing streak.
