European rules, in short
Numbers 1 to 36 alternate red and black; 0 is green. You bet on where the ball lands. Inside bets cover one to six numbers; outside bets cover larger groups.
When 0 hits, outside bets lose. Some European tables offer La Partage or En Prison on even-money bets, but that's really French Roulette territory, and Betsoft's European table, as listed in our records, plays standard rules. Check the help screen.
Betsoft adds quality-of-life buttons: rebet, double, undo, clear. The minimum chip and table maximum come from the casino. Remember the old 2023 page's line about a "5" minimum bet? That was one casino's setting in 2023, not a rule of the game.
Payouts
| Bet | Pays |
|---|---|
| Straight up (1 number) | 35:1 |
| Split (2) | 17:1 |
| Street (3) | 11:1 |
| Corner (4) | 8:1 |
| Six line (6) | 5:1 |
| Dozen or column (12) | 2:1 |
| Red/black, odd/even, low/high (18) | 1:1 |
Also a "first four" bet (0, 1, 2, 3) on some layouts, paying 8:1.
Notice how the payouts line up: each one is (36 ÷ numbers covered) minus 1. A fair game would use 37 instead of 36. That one-number gap is the zero, again.
The 2.70%, explained
Every bet on the layout carries the same 2.70% edge. RTP: 97.30%.
The zero does all the work. Remove it and roulette would be a fair game with no house advantage. Add a second zero (American wheel) and the edge goes to 5.26%. That's why "European" is the word to look for in a lobby, or better, "French" with La Partage.
Over an hour of quick RNG play at C$2 a spin, maybe 60 spins, the expected cost is around C$3.25. Small. Variance, though, can make that hour cost C$60 or pay C$60. That's roulette.
Why the Martingale disappoints
Everyone discovers the Martingale eventually. Bet red, double after each loss, and the first win recovers everything plus one unit.
The problem? Losing streaks. Seven reds in a row is not rare over a long evening, and starting at C$5, the eighth bet is C$640. Table maximums and bankrolls stop the doubling long before the maths "works", and when it breaks, it breaks big.
Try it in the free demo. Really. Watching it fail with play credits is cheaper than reading about it, and more convincing.
Reverse systems (doubling after wins, like the Paroli) feel safer and are, in the sense that they cap the loss. They don't change the edge either.
The boring alternative: flat stakes and a fixed budget. It won't win you anything extra either, it just doesn't blow up. No system removes the 2.70%.
RNG table vs live European wheels
Betsoft's game is RNG: certified software picks each result, and the free mode runs on play credits. You control the speed.
Live European roulette is the most common live table, real money only, with a croupier and a real wheel. Same 2.70%. Live is slower, which reduces spins per hour and therefore expected cost per hour. Keep that in mind when you compare. See live casino.
An aside for Montrealers: if you've stood at a roulette table at the Casino de Montréal, check the wheel type there too next time. Checking is a good habit, online or on Île Notre-Dame.
