Main game plus one side bet

The base game is standard multi-deck blackjack. Hit, stand, double, split, dealer draws to a fixed rule.

The Perfect Pairs bet is optional and placed before the deal. It looks only at your first two cards and wins if they form a pair. Three kinds of pairs exist:

• Mixed pair: same rank, different colours (a red 7 and a black 7).
• Coloured pair: same rank, same colour, different suits (7 of hearts, 7 of diamonds).
• Perfect pair: identical cards (two 7 of hearts), which needs more than one deck in the shoe.

The side bet settles straight away. Your main hand then plays out normally, whatever happened to the pair.

Our 2023 page also mentioned Playtech; both studios have had a Perfect Pairs table, which is why you might find two versions in one lobby. The rules above are the shared core, and the exact paytable sits in each game's help screen.

Bets and payouts

Those are the common paytables. Check the one in front of you; a single step down on the mixed pair matters.

Two edges, very different

The main game: about 0.5% with basic strategy. Fine.

The side bet: roughly 4 to 6%, depending on deck count and paytable. That is about ten times the main game, which tells you everything about why casinos love side bets.

Is it a terrible bet? Not terrible, just expensive. Think of it the way you think of the Tim Hortons "just this once" donut that somehow happens every morning. Fine occasionally. Bad as a habit.

A sensible way to use the side bet

Keep the side bet small relative to the main bet. A C$1 pair bet next to a C$10 hand changes your session cost a little; a C$10 pair bet next to a C$10 hand roughly doubles what the table costs you per hour.

And on the main hand, the side bet changes nothing. Do not split a pair of 10s because the pair "already paid". Basic strategy stays the same.

A word on the 2023 page: it talked about "huge winnings with a little luck". The 25:1 perfect pair is the top prize here. Nice, not huge. Be clear on that before you play.

Try this in demo: play 200 rounds with the side bet and 200 without, same main stake. Compare. It's not proof of anything (200 hands is a tiny sample), but it shows how fast the side bet bleeds when pairs don't come. No method makes it a winning bet.
