Online Casinos in British Columbia

By the Best Canadian Casinos editorial team · Checked: 14 Oct 2026 · 19+ (18+ QC, MB, AB)

In British Columbia, the legal online casino has one name: PlayNow, run by the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC). It is open to players aged 19 and over who are physically in BC.

International casinos also accept BC players. This page explains both, plainly, and leaves the choice with you. Checked: 14 Oct 2026.

PlayNow, in one paragraph

PlayNow.com is BCLC's online gaming site and, in its own words, is "available exclusively to players located in BC" (playnow.com, official). It covers lottery, casino, live casino, sports betting, poker and bingo under one account. That is a wider menu than Loto-Québec's online casino, which does not show poker or bingo, and it is the only online gambling site authorized by the Province of British Columbia.

Short and boring, by design. Crown sites usually are.

What you can actually play

Six product areas, all on one login:

  • Lottery, the original BCLC business, now online.
  • Casino: slots and table games.
  • Live casino, with dealers on camera.
  • Sports betting.
  • Poker.
  • Bingo.

Specific game titles, studios, limits and promotions change often and we have not catalogued them for this update, so check on site for what is running this month.

If you want to try game types before you commit real money anywhere, our free games section has demo versions of slots like Wolf Run and Da Vinci Diamonds, plus blackjack and roulette variants. No account needed. Useful on a Vancouver November day when it has rained for eleven days and counting.

One platform, three provinces

BCLC built PlayNow, and two other provinces now run their own versions on BCLC's platform.

Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries offers PlayNow to Manitobans, with an 18+ age limit there. Saskatchewan launched its PlayNow on 3 Nov 2022; SaskGaming manages it, SIGA operates it and the SLGA regulates it, with casino play at 19+.

Same name, same engine underneath, but each province's site serves only players located in that province. A BC account does not let you play from Winnipeg, and the other way round. Snowbirds and people who split time between Kelowna and Regina should keep that in mind; we have not tested how each site handles a cross-province move, so ask PlayNow's support before relying on it.

The legal reason the three are separate is Criminal Code s. 207: each provincial government conducts and manages gaming in its own province. More on that on our legal status page.

Age 19, and where you are standing

19 is the minimum age for gambling in BC. Our source for that is secondary (the provincial age tables in public references), so if you are close to the line, PlayNow's own age check at sign-up is the one that counts.

Location matters as much as age. PlayNow is limited to players located in BC, which means your device's location at the time you play, not the address on your driver's licence. A BC resident on holiday in Banff is, for those hours, in Alberta, and Alberta has its own regulated market since 13 Jul 2026. Our Alberta page covers it.

What offshore casinos mean for BC players

Plain facts first, opinions kept to a minimum.

Under Criminal Code s. 207(1)(a), only a provincial government may conduct and manage a lottery scheme in its province, and that includes online casino games (Justice Laws, official). In BC, that is BCLC. Every other online casino a BC player can reach is operating without BC authorization.

Many of those sites do accept BC players. They are usually licensed by a regulator outside the province: the Kahnawà:ke Gaming Commission in Québec, the Tobique Gaming Commission in New Brunswick, or authorities overseas. Those licences give you a named company and a body that takes complaints. They do not give you BC consumer protection.

What that means in practice:

  • If a withdrawal is delayed or a bonus dispute goes wrong, your route is the casino and then its own regulator. BCLC and the province have no role.
  • BC self-exclusion through BCLC applies to BCLC products. It does not reach an offshore account.
  • Terms, wagering and withdrawal caps vary widely. We have seen everything from 20x wagering with a C$9,000 daily limit to 200x with a C$4,000 weekly cap on big wins.

The Criminal Code offences are framed mainly around operating and keeping gaming. We are not aware of BC players being prosecuted for playing offshore, but we have not researched BC case law specifically, so treat that as unverified. Not legal advice.

Recreational winnings are generally not taxable in Canada under CRA Folio S3-F9-C1, wherever you won them. General information, not tax advice.

If you do decide to look at international sites, our casino list shows the licence and operator for each one, and the real money page goes through wagering and payout terms. We list them because they exist and BC readers ask; we do not claim they are authorized in BC.

The table does not make the decision for you. It is meant to make the trade-off visible, which most casino pages avoid doing.

On payments, one more thing. We are sometimes asked which BC banks allow Interac payments to casinos. No Canadian bank we checked publishes a policy blocking gambling payments, and we have not tested BC banks specifically. The Interac page has what we do know.

GameSense and help in BC

GameSense is BCLC's responsible-gambling programme (reported). Look for it on PlayNow: limits, explanations of how games work and the route to self-exclusion. The name has travelled, too; Alberta's support service runs under GameSense AB.

Before you need any of it, look at the limit settings in your PlayNow account and set one. It takes a minute, and it is easier than wishing you had.

For support, the BC Gambling Support Line answers 24/7 at 1-888-795-6111 (gov.bc.ca, official; reported). It is free and confidential.

If you are in Québec, the line to call is Jeu : aide et référence at 1 800 461-0140; in Ontario, ConnexOntario at 1-866-531-2600. Every province is listed on our responsible gambling page.

One honest observation to end on: a Canucks playoff run and an online sportsbook on the same phone is a combination that has caught more than a few people off guard. Set the limit before the puck drops, not after the third goal against.
